Top 10: 2009 Beach Bodies So far, 2009 has been a year of epic change, for better and for worse. We’ve seen a new president take office, igniting the hopes of a public that has long been in dire shortage of it. The economy is still sputtering, America’s national pastime is a dope show replete with fallen giants, and not even fairytale Hollywood romances are safe. Surely, one man can’t turn all this lead into gold, and certainly not in his first 100 days, right? So where do we turn, then, to escape the madness, to avoid the headlines, to hide from our dwindling bank statements? Why, to the beach, of course! Because for every Bernie Madoff, there’s a Bar Rafaeli; for every Manny Ramirez, there’s a Marisa Miller, and for every Spencer Pratt, there’s a Heidi Montag. Growing up in Barbados, we can only assume that Rihanna spent her formative years perfecting the art of wearing a bikini; then she became a superstar, got involved with an insecure pip-squeak whose last name rhymes with “clown,” saw her personal photographs leaked online, and now must battle to regain her rightful place atop the pop charts. Rihanna established her dance-pop credentials in summer 2005 with her debut smash hit, “Pon de Replay,” and continued to demonstrate such hit potential in subsequent years (e.g., “S.O.S.” in 2006; “Umbrella” in 2007; “Disturbia” in 2008). However, it was the singer’s third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, that made her a full-fledged international pop star with a regular presence atop the charts.
